When it comes to learning a concept, people learn in many different ways—through listening, discussion, reflection, doing something. Maybe all of the above. If you’re planning a training session or workshop, it’s ideal if you can incorporate many of these learning styles to ensure that whatever concept you’re teaching is thoroughly understood.
The Method
Active Learning is a teaching method coined by R W Revans where participants are engaged in the learning process rather than passively listening to an instructor. When a new piece of knowledge is introduced, participants use an activity to engage with the idea. Participants then discuss, or debrief, their experience and reflect on how it could be applicable in their work. In short, Active Learning can be broken into four parts: Teach, Do, Discuss, and Reflect.
