As a Social Enterprise, we use our profits to fund Olympia Boxing, a charitable organisation that works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to promote social inclusion.
Olympia Boxing run sessions at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, Bristol, for young people from the local area. A key part of this is to work with St Brendan’s Pastoral Support provision to provide benefits to the participants and give them a whole student experience.
Olympia help students who are at risk of exclusion due to their behaviour to maintain good commitment to the boxing and, in turn, to positively impact on their performance in college. Olympia does this through the development of an understanding of how skills learned at the boxing club can transfer to college life.
This project is building on the positive impact that the boxing project has made at St Brendan’s since September 2015. Olympia retains participants and engages new young people on a weekly basis. Olympia helps to combat Sports England finding that has recently identified a drop in sporting participation in the age range 14 – 16, 19% to 8% for girls and 28% to 14% in terms of regular activity. Olympia achieves this by inspiring and motivating young people to become active.
As boxing is not a sport offered at school we have seen the clear way that it has capture the attention of our student community. Through the delivery structure we have in place and ensure an environment that coaches to all abilities and Olympia has a positive impact on young people’s attitudes to sport.
In April 2016, Olympia Boxing will launch a Satellite Club at St Brendan’s, funded by Sport England for the next 3 years.
