In successful support groups peer-facilitation is seen to foster mutually supportive, reciprocal relationships capable of inspiring hope among group members. These processes promote recovery, social inclusion and personal growth. Successful groups are based on principles of co-production in terms of shared aims, negotiated agendas, clear communication, and engagement with the wider community. Development of individuals’ roles and support for peer support workers were also important factors. Overall, a group’s success is seen in terms of growth in members’ self-esteem, empowerment, and optimism.
